I Heart Man Night

Blog Comments Off

This past weekend my family had a man night. Yes, you read that right. My family- girls included – had a “man” night. And that might not make sense to you. “Man” night doesn’t sound like it would involve GIRLS, I know. But really, doesn’t that make it the ULTIMATE man night? Wade picked out what we’d eat, Mom made it (it’s nice having a girl along to do the cooking), and we watched a “kill movie,” otherwise known as an “action movie.” I took pictures of it all. (Sorry for the blurriness… I’m still waiting for a flash to magically appear on my iPhone. Maybe it will come out with one on the next iPhone. Which I am totally getting.)

Reece summed up our collective feelings on man night the next morning when we were cleaning up the carnage. ”I heart man night.”

Me too, Reece. Me too.

There is an appropriate form to doing a push up. Don’t believe me? Well, maybe you would if MY dad had laughed at YOU when he saw you perform a push up. Not that I’m bitter or anything. Really. I just waited until he was out of the country to attempt another one. You see, there’s a cool app on the iPhone (well, there are LOTS of cool apps, but I’m only talking about one) that says it can get me to be able to do 100 consecutive push ups in six weeks. My initial test (of consecutive push ups) is not quite so impressive – I was at a measly 21. (My dad can do 50 without even thinking about it. Show off.)

I was so nervous about my push up form that I made my brother Logan (who appears in this blog a lot, but he’s family and can’t help it) watch me so that he could give me pointers. Unlike me, Logan does an excellent push up and dad has never laughed at him. At least about push ups. (Are you seeing a pattern with Logan here? Good photographer, good push ups… some people have all the luck.) After informing me (LISTEN Dad) that I was doing an (I quote!) “EXCELLENT” push up, Logan showed me how I could work my chest more by moving my hands closer into my body. Of course, he had to demonstrate so I could see what he was talking about.

My brother looks good when he does a push up. When I told him (someone’s got to let him know – you know, so when a really hot girl walks by he can drop down and start doing push ups so that she’ll pay attention), he looked at me and deliberately. said. “I look good ALL the time.”

That’s how many characters I can send in one text. (20 more than a tweet!) My sister Jessie and I have a “feel good” sort of thing going right now. We came up with it during a girls’ night (so normally it’d be top secret), but I’ll let you in on what we’re doing. (I’m so nice.)

Every day, both of us will text the other something nice… anything nice, but it always includes “I love you and…” Here are some examples from the past week.

  • “I love you and your beautiful eyes.”
  • “I love you and your beautiful singing voice.”
  • “I love you and your luscious long hair.”
  • “I love you and admire your guts.”
  • “I love you and think you’re an awesome bottle washer.”
  • “I love you and your luscious long legs.”
  • “I love you and your deep brown eyes.”
  • “I love you and your smokin’ hot booty.”
  • “I love you and how nice you were this morning.”

Now, it’s just a little thing – you’ll notice that all of these things are LESS than 160 characters. I actually think they’re less than 140. (So you could send them in tweets too!) But what a great way to have a connection with your sister! It takes about 10 seconds – more like 60 if you text like my dad – and makes you both smile. Don’t you think it’s worth your time?

Today, I’m issuing a little challenge… well, more like throwing down the gauntlet. Yeah, that’s right. Throwing down the freaking gauntlet.

Text someone. Think of someone you care about, and let them know. It’s easy – you could even copy one of our examples. (Use the “luscious legs” text judiciously please. And the “smokin’ hot booty” should only be used for those people that you are super close too. Trust me.)

Oh? And before all the rest of my siblings start being sad that this is a Jessie/Leila thing – I texted you this morning. Because I love you all too. And your luscious legs.

One of these days I want to run a marathon. You know, just to put it on the list of “really cool things I’ve done.”  The problem?  Well, I’m not much of a runner.  I hate the treadmill.  I’d much rather do the stairs.  If I’m going to run, I want it to be a little less tedious.  (Somehow, the stairs are never as boring as the treadmill.) I think that I might have found the answer to my problem – the iMapMyRun app for the iPhone keeps track of me as I run using GPS.  I never have to measure how long I run or keep track of my time – it keeps track of all that, PLUS it calculates my pace.  I can be outside and just run… I love it!  As long as the weather holds out, I think I’m going to be outside. Running.

Let Freedom Ring!

Blog Comments Off

Freedom RingThere’s a ring I wear almost every day to help me remember all the blessings in my life.  I call it my “freedom” ring.  This past week was particularly wonderful and I felt it deserved a special celebration of the life I enjoy.  My mom and I went to my favorite restaurant on earth this weekend – Fogo de Chao – in Kansas City to celebrate.  I’ve been to their D.C. and Philadelphia restaurants, and the food and service are always unsurpassed.

Freedom! Fogo de Chao 2009Kansas City was the best of them all!  I wore a white coat out – they brought an extra tablecloth to cover it when they hung it on the back of my chair.  When I ordered my drink, I asked for tons of ice with my water (my normal mode of operation).  Normally they bring your water out before you even ask for your drinks, and it arrived (as usual) while our first server was explaining things – and he sent it away because it did not contain enough ice.  Within a minute, we had water with TONS of ice. Our servings were gigantic, and the cheese balls (my very favorite part) were never empty.  I ordered a brazillian lemonade and one of our servers stopped by to give us the recipe of how to make them at home. We were well taken care of. Since I live so close (dangerously close!) I will be back.  Often.

Some of the things I celebrated:

Life is worth celebrating every single day.  There’s a quote I love that says “The best things in life aren’t things.”  That’s so true – and I was happy to celebrate some of those things this weekend.
