Alisha might be my mother’s favorite child. If you doubt me, take a look at the screenshot of Alisha’s facebook wall. (You can make it bigger if you click on it.) I mean, it’s not like I am seeing Mom every day, but who gets the facebook message? Uh huh. What happened to the whole candy bar talk?
Oh well. Fair or not, at least I have the satisfaction that Alisha lives in Missouri vicariously through my blog. (And no, that’s not narcissism talking. She told me. So unless you’re calling her narcissistic…) Of course, I would trade that satisfaction in a heartbeat if she’d move out here. Via the blog, I’m her official updater until we convince her to move. (See Dad, this whole “living your whole life online” is not so bad.)
So, continuing with the reasons that Alisha should move here…
- I discovered the BEST artisan ice cream place. Ever. And it’s right near my house. Pineapple-cilantro sorbet? Yes, it sounds totally weird. And it’s amazing.
- In the same week, I discovered KC’s own version of my favorite frozen yogurt hotspot in Vegas. Except better. Also right near my house. (I knew moving was a good idea.) I’d highly recommend the Pomegranate Yogurt with kiwi, strawberries and pineapple. It hits the spot every time. Plus, you pay by the ounce – you can make it the perfect size for you. No small, medium, or large issues to deal with.
- You could come with me to the MoBar Family Law Conference and hang out at the Lake while I attend seminars all day. The shopping’s good too – outlets galore! You’ve got time to plan – it’s next August.
- Road trips. The latest was this past weekend to McPherson, Kansas. I drove from the MoBar Family Law Conference to pick up the kids from vacation at our Aunt & Uncle’s house. I know, it’s shocking, but we don’t go to McPherson just for the sightseeing. Unless you count “seeing” our darling cousins. Then we are totally guilty of going there for the sightseeing.
Since getting back from the MoBar Family Law Conference this week, I’ve been working around the clock. But those are a few of the simple pleasures that are a part of life here in KCMO. C’mon Alisha… don’t you want to be a part of it?

But my law firm site is now up! It is not perfect yet, but it’s done enough for my office move to Kansas City on Monday. Wahoo! Take a look – www.leilashealaw.com.

PS – I promise to blog more later. This weekend is full of boxes and moving. Normally, I wouldn’t plan for anyone to move their apartment AND their law office all at one time, but when you live above your office… It’s going to be a busy weekend.

Today I was sworn in to the Kansas Bar. I’m now officially licensed to practice law in three states – Nevada, Missouri and Kansas. Participating today in Topeka reminded me of my very first swearing in almost a year ago in Las Vegas. My family wasn’t able to come to that one, and I was explaining the process to my then 11 year old brother. When I was telling him, he got indignant and asked “Why are they swearing at you?!” He’s a little older and wiser now.

My family has been there along the journey to every bar exam. When I took the Missouri Bar, two of my brothers came along with me to Jefferson City. We went out to dinner the night before the exam to celebrate – and the next morning, I ended up with food poisoning. I’m confident that it was the prayers of my whole family that helped me to pass that test, because I don’t know how I made it through the exam. On the way home from Jefferson City (about a four hour drive) we had a tire blow out after a log fell off a big truck in front of our little Corolla. My fifteen year-old brother managed to change the tire (in the dark on practically no shoulder!), we got off the freeway, and made it to a Wal-Mart where they changed the tire. Unfortunately Wal-Mart didn’t check the other tires like I asked – less than 15 minutes after we got on the freeway again, another tire blew out. Needless to say, it was a very long day, followed by a very long night. When I got my pass results, we all celebrated – and then I went out to visit and was sworn in at the local bank by a notary public.

Thankfully the Kansas Bar was uneventful. No food poisoning. No tire blowouts. That was all I wanted. Passing was an extra bonus. :)

I’m so grateful for my family – I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am without their love and support for my dreams. Thanks guys! I love you.
